Automatic tag creation at the post level

We need the ability to create tags on the fly when adding posts, events, etc. Most forums and blogs have this option. As I post this one, I'm unable to tag it as an enhancement request, for example. As a moderator, we should be able to turn this feature on/off for members and/or moderators, but it would really add to the usability of the site. Thanks!
