Setting Up Gamification (Admin Guide)

The Gamification module allows you to recognize and reward meaningful contributions in your community. This guide walks through how you, as an admin, can configure badges and manage automations to bring your gamification system to life.

What You Can Manage as an Admin

Admins have full control over badge setup and visibility:

  • Create new badges

  • Upload custom badge images

  • Write titles and descriptions

  • Customize the user notification text shown when a badge is awarded

  • Activate or deactivate automated badges at any time

  • Award badges manually for offline or special contributions

  • View the logic used for automated badges (badge query)

All badge content is editable in the Admin > Gamification area of your community.

How Automated Badges Work

Automated badges are awarded based on member activity in your community. These badges are powered by rules (called badge queries) that determine when a badge should be granted or updated.

Examples of badge triggers:

  • Posting in a specific category

  • Getting 10 likes

  • Visiting daily over a period of time

  • Your answer to a question gets marked as best answer

You don’t need to write any code. Your Forumbee account manager or our support team will configure the queries for you based on your goals. You can view the query for each badge, but we handle writing and updating them.

Types of Badges You Can Use

The following badge types are available:

Badge Type

Description

Achievement

Awarded once for a specific action (e.g., first post, profile completed)

Progress

Earned repeatedly as milestones are hit (e.g., every 10 replies)

Timed

Based on recent activity in a time window (e.g., 10 replies in 30 days)

Manual

Assigned directly by an admin for offline or discretionary achievements

Each badge can include its own custom image, title, description, and notification text.

Points Badge

The Points badge is a special badge that tracks a member’s cumulative activity. You can assign point values to actions such as:

  • Posting a topic or reply

  • Liking or receiving likes

  • Earning badges

  • Following categories or members

The number of points are displayed visually on the badge, helping members track their participation over time.

Manual Badges

Manual badges can be awarded at any time to single or multiple members. Common uses include:

  • Recognizing offline participation or real-world contributions

  • Awarding completion of courses or training programs

  • Showing achievement of credentials or certifications

  • Highlighting standout involvement from internal teams or event attendees

Admins can also remove manual badges if needed.

Getting Started

To configure your gamification system:

  1. Plan your badge goals

What behaviors or milestones do you want to encourage? (e.g., asking questions, gaining followers, completing training)

  2. Create your badges

In the admin area, set up each badge with a name, image, description, and custom notification.

  3. Submit your logic

Let your Forumbee account manager know what should trigger each automated badge. We’ll implement the rules and set them up to run automatically.

  4. Review and activate

Once set up, you can preview, edit, activate, or deactivate badges at any time.
